Margaret Heitkemper, PhD, RN, FAAN, inducted into the Academy in 1990, is one of the foremost nurse scientists in the areas of sleep and digestive health, investigating pathophysiology and non-pharmacological management.
Her exemplary career in research has been equally matched by her ability to set standards, mentor future scientists, and shape the trajectory of the field. Through interdisciplinary collaboration and national policy leadership, Dr. Heitkemper has advanced the development of novel tools, biomarkers, and methods that have expanded the reach of nurse-led science and established sustainable platforms for discovery and innovation. She currently holds positions as Professor in the Department of Biobehavioral Nursing and Health Informatics, and as an Adjunct Professor, Division of Gastroenterology at the University of Washington School of Nursing. Dr. Heitkemper is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and Washington State Academy of Science.
