Luv to Love
Mr. Leon Wells is a maternal health advocate, public speaker, and the Co-Founder and Executive Director of Luv to Love, a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing respectful maternal care and birth equity.
Mr. Wells became an advocate through one of the most traumatic moments of his life. After his wife was discharged from the hospital while in active labor, he was forced to deliver their daughter on the side of the expressway in his truck. In those critical moments, Leon experienced the fear, helplessness, and responsibility of trying to save both his wife and newborn without medical assistance.
As a Black husband and father, Leon understood the difficult reality many families face. He feared that if he forcefully demanded care for his wife, he could be perceived as aggressive or threatening, potentially escalating the situation instead of getting her the help she desperately needed. Choosing to remain calm, he focused on getting his wife to safety – never imagining he would become the one to deliver his own child.
That experience transformed Leon into a passionate advocate for maternal health equity. Today, he works alongside his wife to educate healthcare professionals, policymakers, and communities on the importance of listening to mothers, eliminating bias in healthcare, and ensuring families receive timely, respectful, and lifesaving care. Through Luv to Love, Leon champions systemic change so that no husband, partner, or family has to experience the fear and trauma his family endured. His advocacy is rooted in protecting mothers, empowering fathers, and helping create a healthcare system where every family is heard, respected, and safe.
