Kathleen A. Bower, DNSc, RN, FAONL, FAAN, has built a remarkable career on two enduring priorities: elevating quality patient and family care through the work of nurses and teams, and generously mentoring colleagues throughout their professional journeys. Her legacy is one of both intellectual innovation and quiet, determined generosity. At New England Medical Center in Boston, Dr. Bower co-created provider-based Case Management and Clinical Paths, pioneering strategies that transformed how nurses manage care and that continue to shape exceptional patient and family outcomes while supporting financial sustainability across health systems. The scale of her influence is difficult to overstate. Dr. Bower created a paradigm shift within clinical teams, leading to tailored sequencing and coordination that significantly improved quality outcomes, reduced cost, and smoothed variability in clinical practice. 

Recognizing the power of shared knowledge and the importance of uplifting the profession, Dr. Bower’s numerous publications, presentations, and education highlight the vital role nurses play in achieving both clinical excellence and financial stewardship. Case Management is now a central function throughout health care organizations nationally and internationally, a living testament to the enduring and innovative nature of Dr. Bower's work. She went on to co-establish The Center for Case Management, where she served as CEO and CFO for more than 25 years. Dr. Bower has shared her financial acumen and expertise, along with her generosity, to the Academy through her role as Development Committee Chair, as a member of the Finance Committee, and as a former member of both the Nominating Committee and the Fellow Selection Committee Dr. Bower has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the growth and success of others. This year, the Organization of Nurse Leaders – New England created the Kathleen Bower Legacy Award for Excellence in Mentoring, naming her its inaugural 2026 recipient. In their tribute, the organization noted that her extraordinary dedication to mentorship is her defining legacy. Dr. Bower has spent a career helping nurses recognize their own potential and how to move fully into it. She is able to identify the potential in nurses and nurse leaders, guide them with intention, champion their growth, open doors to new opportunities, and position her mentees for recognition, advancement, and success. Through her guidance, countless nurses have developed the confidence, skills, and vision necessary to lead transformative changes within their organizations and across the nursing profession. Dr. Bower was inducted as Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing in 1999.
