Windy Alonso

PhD, RN, FHFSA, FAHA

Associate Professor

University of Virginia School of Nursing

Windy Alonso is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Nursing Research at the University of Virginia School of Nursing. Dr. Alonso’s research focuses on improving exercise adherence and cardiovascular outcomes in adults with heart failure. She leads the NIH-funded HEART Camp team and has refined interventions that combine coaching and wearable technology to support exercise adherence. Dr. Alonso has advanced heart failure nursing science through authorship of over 40 peer-reviewed publications and sustained mentorship of future generations of nurse scientists. Her scientific impact and mentorship have been recognized with regional and national honors, including fellowships in the American Heart Association and the Heart Failure Society of America. She actively serves on NIH study sections, editorial boards, and national committees focused on cardiovascular health and nursing research. A dedicated advocate for nursing science and rural health, she also works to elevate the role of nurses in research, policy, and interdisciplinary care, and champion rural health through research and service. She holds a PhD and MS in Nursing from the Pennsylvania State University, a BSN from DeSales University, an AAS in Nursing from Northampton Community College, and a BS in Biology from Susquehanna University.
