Vicki Freedenberg is a Nurse Scientist at Children’s National Hospital and Associate Professor of Pediatrics at George Washington University. Dr. Freedenberg is an Electrophysiology Nurse Scientist with 30+ years of experience caring for pediatric patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) and cardiac devices. Her most significant scientific contributions focus on developing and evaluating tailored Mindfulness-Based interventions (MBIs) to alleviate anxiety in adolescents. She conducted the first published studies using MBIs in this patient population, showing improved coping and reduced and anxiety. Her work expanded to include online delivery formats, adult CHD populations, and healthcare providers. Hospital leadership invited her to extend her mindfulness strategies to hospital staff, resulting in the creation of Mindful Mentors, a 12-month, wellness program now completed by 200 staff members. She received the first Adult Congenital Heart Association grant to study a virtual MBI for adults with CHD. Her research has been presented at multiple conferences and adopted in 81 clinical and 11 employee wellness settings nationally and internationally. Dr. Freedenberg served as VP of Allied Professionals for the Pediatric and Congenital Electrophysiology Society, leading national research initiatives. She was the recipient of the 2020 ANA Direct Patient Care Award. Dr. Freedenberg received her BSN, MSN, and PhD from the University of Maryland School of Nursing.
