Sheryl Mitchell is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Advanced Professional Nursing Practice & Leadership at the University of South Carolina College of Nursing. Her career spans over a decade of leadership in nursing education, policy advocacy, and workforce development. Dr. Mitchell developed nationally adopted curricula and co-founded the Determinants of Health Special Interest Group within the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties, engaging over 3,000 NP educators to integrate social determinants of health (SDOH) into graduate nursing education. Her work has strengthened the NP workforce and promoted equitable, competency-based learning nationwide. A committed policy advocate, Dr. Mitchell co-authored state legislation expanding preceptor tax credits to improve access to care and clinical training capacity. She also contributes to statewide regulatory guidance through service on the South Carolina Board of Nursing’s Advanced Practice Committee and the Nursing Practice and Standards Committee, which collectively impact over 80,000 nurses. Her community engagement includes board service with the Free Medical Clinic and volunteer health education with the Midlands Fatherhood Coalition. Dr. Mitchell earned her Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and Doctor of Nursing Practice degrees from the University of South Carolina.
