Shela Hirani

Shela Hirani is a Professor at the University of Regina’s Faculty of Nursing in Canada, and a Founding Director of Breastfeeding Advocacy Research Lab. Dr. Hirani’s breastfeeding advocacy and research in Canada and internationally are dismantling systemic breastfeeding barriers, reducing malnutrition-related morbidities among infants, and promoting breastfeeding practices of mothers in diverse care settings, including disaster-affected zones, post-secondary institutions, workplaces and public spaces. Dr Hirani’s innovative “Breastfeeding Advocacy Research Hub” offers over 100 easy-to-understand, evidence-based e-resources for mothers and stakeholders. These resources reached over 200,000 mothers worldwide and built the capacity of over 5,000 professionals and service providers. Dr. Hirani’s work has resulted in the creation of safe breastfeeding spaces, innovative toolkits, and inclusive breastfeeding programs and policies. The World Health Organization recognized her as one of the 100 outstanding women nurses around the world in 2020. Dr. Hirani received over 50 honors recognizing her work, including the King Charles III Coronation Medal, WXN Canada’s Most Powerful Women Top 100 Award, and the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal from the Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan. Dr. Hirani earned her PhD in Nursing from the University of Alberta and her MScN and BScN degrees from Aga Khan University.
