PhD, AGNP-C, PMHNP-BC

Associate Professor

University of Alabama Capstone College of Nursing

Shameka L. Cody is an Associate Professor at The University of Alabama Capstone College of Nursing and a board-certified Adult-Geriatric and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. Her research focuses on insomnia and related conditions in older adults with HIV. She has led interdisciplinary studies linking sleep quality and cognition in this population. Her NIH-funded work found worse insomnia and depressive symptoms among people with HIV, particularly those taking opioids. Her recent work demonstrates that telephone-delivered Brief Behavioral Treatment for Insomnia improves sleep in adults with HIV, with effects lasting at least one month. Dr. Cody led two HRSA-funded projects using a clinic-to-community model to reduce stigma and expand behavioral health access in rural areas. She co-developed a hands-on naloxone training, now published as a clinical guide. She has authored over 35 peer-reviewed articles and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Psychosocial Nursing and Mental Health Services. In recognition of her expertise, she received the 2020 Distinguished Educator in Gerontological Nursing Excellence Award. With over seventeen years of clinical experience, she continues her advanced practice role serving under- and uninsured patients in rural Alabama. Dr. Cody earned her MSN and PhD from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
