Sarah Abboud is an Associate Professor and Associate Department Head at University of Illinois Chicago, College of Nursing. Dr. Abboud’s research is focused on the development of evidence-based research programs to improve health outcomes among Arab immigrants in the U.S. She has received NIH and other interdisciplinary funded research awards to adapt and test community-based interventions to improve sexual and mental health outcomes among Arab US immigrants, including LGBTQ+ individuals. Her program of research is grounded in social justice and health equity frameworks. Dr. Abboud also serves as a board member for the Lebanese Medical Association for Sexual Health, advancing LGBTQ health equity in Lebanon. Alongside her research, her advocacy work centers on the (in)visibility of Arab identities in the US, which contributed to the successful addition in 2023 of a new Arab racial/ethnic identity in the US census. The impact of her research is far-reaching and published in journals of nursing, immigrant health, and psychology. She has received numerous awards including the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Faculty Award. Dr. Abboud holds a BS and MS in Nursing from the American University of Beirut, Lebanon, and a PhD and Post-doctoral Fellowship from the University of Pennsylvania, School of Nursing.
