Peninnah Kako

Peninnah M. Kako is a Professor and Executive Committee (Department) Chair at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, College of Health Professions and Sciences, School of Nursing in Milwaukee Wisconsin. Dr. Kako’s research addresses trauma-informed care globally through the development of interventions to mitigate the trauma women experience, decrease gender-based violence, and reduce health disparities. To reduce stigma towards women in Kenya living with HIV, Dr. Kako has worked with residents (100,000) to establish two community-based peer support groups and develop 20 income-generating businesses. In Wisconsin, she has established a trauma-informed Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE) program, funded by Health Resources Service Administration focused on thwarting violence, reducing disparities, and increasing health equity. Through this work, 78 SANEs are now providing culturally safe trauma-informed care to underserved populations. Dr. Kako’s trauma-informed care research and interventions have advanced health equity for vulnerable women globally, with widely cited scholarship (~1000 citations), conference presentations, and media appearances focused on improving health outcomes and wellbeing for underserved women and influencing global policy. Dr. Kako earned her BSN, MSN, and PhD degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
