Matthew S. Howard is the Business Development Manager at the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, adjunct faculty at Northern Kentucky University (NKU) and the University of Southern Indiana (USI), and a staff nurse in his clinical specialty of emergency nursing at Deaconess Gateway Hospital. Dr. Howard is a prominent advocate for civility in nursing, addressing workplace toxicity with practical, evidence-based solutions. His experiences as a nurse who encountered bullying firsthand inspired him to develop a course on communication strategies. Sigma incorporated his asynchronous course, now utilized by 685 nurses across 10 countries, into its “Surviving Your First Years as A Nurse” program. The award-winning study developed around this course has been cited 58 times and has ignited discussions and led to policy changes within organizations. He has authored peer-reviewed publications related to civility and delivered presentations worldwide, reaching over 3,100 nurses. In his work within several organizations, Dr. Howard established clinical and leadership programs designed to empower nurses from various backgrounds to spearhead change within their organizations. These initiatives have positively influenced over 275 nurses across 40 different countries. Dr. Howard holds a DNP from NKU, an MSN from USI, and undergraduate degrees from USI and the University of Kentucky.
