Mark Lockwood is an Associate Professor at the University of Illinois Chicago College of Nursing whose primary interest is in developing patient-centered interventions to reduce symptom burden in chronic kidney disease (CKD). At the state, national, and international levels, his contributions have advanced the field of symptom science in CKD. His research on patient-reported barriers to completing the pre-kidney transplant evaluation in at-risk populations contributes to policy-relevant knowledge for improving access to care among those seeking a kidney transplant. Moreover, he has a clear record of sustained funding to support his research program. His research has been disseminated widely in more than 40 peer-reviewed publications. The impact of his research is evidenced by over 750 citations and an h-index of 15. Among his most influential works are two manuscripts published in Nature Reviews Nephrology, raising awareness of the negative effects symptom burden in people with kidney disease. Currently, his research program interrogates microbiome-mediated effects of kidney transplantation on self-reported symptom burden, specifically pain, before and after kidney transplantation. Dr. Lockwood holds a PhD from Oregon Health and Science University, an MSN from Loyola University in New Orleans, and an ASN and BSN from Goldfarb School of Nursing at Barnes-Jewish Hospital.
