Marian Altman

Clinical Practice Specialist Supervisor

Marian Altman is a Clinical Practice Specialist at the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) where she is the lead faculty and program supervisor for the Clinical Scene Investigator Academy (CSI). As an experienced critical care practitioner and Clinical Nurse Specialist, Dr. Altman has made a significant impact on nursing practice across diverse care settings serving nurses, the profession, patients, families, and the broader public. Throughout a career deeply rooted in clinical practice, Dr. Altman has consistently amplified the voices of nurses. Her focus has been on empowering direct care nurses as leaders and innovators who translate evidence into practice to improve work environments and optimize patient outcomes. Dr. Altman leads a nationally recognized program, the AANP Clinical CSI Academy, that invests in and mentors nurses to spearhead change initiatives grounded in their clinical expertise. This 12-month, hospital-based, experiential nurse leadership and innovation program for direct care nurses to lead change and implement evidence to achieve unit-based change and improve outcomes. Using implementation science, participating nurses measure the quality and fiscal outcomes of their projects demonstrating significant, data-driven improvements in patient care. To date, this program has supported 2.2 million patients, saved millions of dollars, and achieved sustainable, scalable, and transferable improvements across healthcare settings. Dr. Altman earned her BSN, MS, and PhD degrees from Virginia Commonwealth University School of Nursing.
