Maichou Lor

PhD, RN

Associate Professor

University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Nursing

Maichou Lor is an Associate Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her research aims to promote effective and equitable care for individuals with limited English proficiency (LEP), with a focus on the Hmong population. She develops and tests culturally and linguistically appropriate health interventions. Her work has significantly improved access to care for LEP patients in three key areas: hearing assessment, health communication, and cancer prevention. Notably, she created the first Hmong word recognition tests for hearing loss diagnosis, which have been implemented at a major healthcare institution in Madison, WI, and are being considered by audiologists in other states with large Hmong populations. She also developed the first culturally and linguistically specific Hmong medical dictionary, “Lexicon of English-Hmong Medical Terminology,”which is freely available online and through Wisconsin public libraries. Her cancer screening program that incorporates Hmong cultural and communication practices has been adapted for other Asian communities. She serves on several boards, such as the Gerontologist Editorial Review Board, the National Library of Medicine Board of Regents, and the Hmong Nurses Association Board of Directors. Dr. Lor earned her BSN, MS, and PhD degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She completed her postdoctoral fellowship at Columbia University.
