Katie A. Haerling is a Professor at the University of Washington Tacoma School of Nursing and Healthcare Leadership. She is a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) and an alum of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholars Program and the Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholars Program. She is also a U.S. Navy Nurse Corps veteran. Dr. Haerling’s research is widely cited in the literature and examines the reliability and validity of observation-based simulation participant performance assessment procedures. Her work has contributed to significant advances in theory, methods, and measurement that impact simulation used in nursing education. Her ongoing investigations into the effectiveness and cost-utility of experiential and simulation-based learning activities inform best practices and regulation of simulation used in nursing education. Dr. Haerling is committed to identifying the most effective and efficient methods for preparing the next generation of healthcare professionals. She believes that strengthening healthcare education is essential to improve patient outcomes, transform healthcare systems, and ultimately foster a healthier nation and a healthier world. Dr. Haerling earned her BSN from the University of Washington Seattle, her MN from the University of Washington Bothell, and her PhD from Washington State University.
