Karen Sheffield-Abdullah is an Assistant Professor of Nursing at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Certified Nurse-Midwife who strives to improve health and well-being for childbearing women and families. Dr. Sheffield-Abdullah’s research investigates the bio-psycho-social factors influencing adverse health outcomes and disparities among women during the perinatal period. She is passionate about implementing strategies to enhance accessibility of evidence-based mindfulness interventions to historically excluded, minoritized, and marginalized communities. She has served as co-investigator on several projects, including those funded by the American Heart Association, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, National Institute on Mental Health, and National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities. Her deep and sustained clinical expertise has guided her in the development of culturally relevant interventions to reduce disparities in stress-related adverse outcomes during the perinatal period and provide a platform to guide successful models for women’s health care providers that incorporate stress management and improve wellness across the lifespan. Dr. Sheffield-Abdullah has Master of Science in nursing from Yale University, a PhD from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Nursing and completed her postdoctoral fellowship at The University of North Carolina School of Medicine, Program on Integrative Medicine.
