Kami Cooper serves as the Behavioral Health and Wellness Officer for the National Weather Service (NWS), where she leads national strategies to support mental health, crisis response, and organizational wellness for over 4,500 employees across 122 field offices and national centers. In this role, she has developed and implemented systemwide behavioral health protocols, built a Peer Crisis Support Collective, and expanded mental health education initiatives, including Critical Incident Stress Management and Mental Health First Aid training for frontline staff. She is also the founder of Wellness Takes Fortitude, a private integrative psychiatry and wellness practice committed to advancing whole-person care through trauma-informed, evidence-based services. Dr. Cooper’s work focuses on bridging clinical expertise with public health systems leadership, addressing burnout, shift work fatigue, and operational stress across high-demand environments. She has collaborated across federal agencies and with international partners to share best practices in workplace wellness and psychological resilience. Dr. Cooper earned her BSN from Hampton University, MSN from the University of Maryland, and DNP from Duquesne University. She completed her post-master’s training as a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and is currently pursuing certification as an Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner.
