Dean
University of San Diego Hahn School of Nursing
Jane Georges is Dean and Professor of Nursing at the Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science at the University of San Diego. Dr. Georges’ major contribution has been the production of scholarly work over three decades, which has been instrumental in shaping the scope of nursing inquiry internationally. As a professor situated on the US-Mexico border for the past 29 years, Dr. Georges has published work enhancing nursing science’s scope of inquiry philosophically and methodologically. Her research and philosophical publications focus on how power relations- understood as the authority or influence of one group of persons over another- are an essential but understudied factor impacting health. This emphasis on power relations includes the foregrounding of such socially constructed differences as gender, race, and sexual orientation. She was among the first nurse scholars to assert the centrality of power relations across gender, race, and sexual orientation as essential for nursing science. Her work continues to impact research-focused doctoral education in nursing internationally. Dr. Georges earned a BA in Humanities from Santa Clara University, a BSN and MSN from the University of California San Francisco, and a PhD in Nursing Science from the University of Washington School of Nursing.
