U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps

Lieutenant Commander (LCDR) Jamla Rizek currently serves in the Office of the Surgeon General, where she provides high-level strategic coordination, policy advisement, and operational support for the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) Commissioned Corps. In this role, she liaises with senior leadership across federal agencies to ensure alignment of priorities that advance national public health initiatives. As a Junior Clinical Nurse Officer, LCDR Rizek has deployed in response to domestic and international crises, including COVID-19 operations in American Samoa and refugee health missions under Operation Allies Welcome. Her clinical and operational expertise spans emergency care, disaster response, and public health preparedness. She is also recognized for her humanitarian work supporting displaced populations and expanding access to care in underserved and conflict-affected regions. LCDR Rizek has made significant contributions to disaster nursing through her scholarship, mentorship, and academic leadership. She serves on the faculty of the Disaster Medicine Fellowship at Harvard Medical School’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and teaches disaster response and leadership at the University of Lynchburg. An internationally invited speaker, she is widely respected for advancing the practice and visibility of disaster nursing on a global scale. LCDR Rizek received her MSN from the University of Phoenix, and her MBA and Doctor of Nursing Practice at Capella University. She was inducted as a Fellow into the Academy of Emergency Nursing in September 2025.
