Elizabeth Beam

Elizabeth Beam is an Associate Professor at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) College of Nursing. Through development of a grant project called HEROES in emergency preparedness training for Nebraska which started in 2005, she became involved in the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit and was the educator for the unit in 2014 when Ebola Virus Disease was treated in the United States. She serves as a content expert for the PPE Working Group within the educational activity for the National Emerging Special Pathogen Training and Education Center (NETEC) with members from the 13 Regional Emerging Special Pathogen Treatment Centers throughout the United States. Her greatest impact within healthcare worker safety is around safety behavior change in the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and developing interprofessional content and training with a focus on safety and workforce preservation. She is an innovator in pursuit of better powered air purifying respirator systems for public health and healthcare. An inventor, her “Beam Helmet” was recognized by UNeMed, the technology transfer office for UNMC, as the most promising invention for 2024. The helmet is designed to provide safe respiratory protection for healthcare workers in hazardous environments. Dr. Beam completed her BSN and MSN at the UNMC College of Nursing and her PhD from UNMC Graduate Studies.
