Demetrius Abshire is an Associate Professor at the University of South Carolina College of Nursing. Dr. Abshire’s research addresses factors that are associated with poorer health outcomes in rural areas. Publications from his research have advanced the science in areas including rural-urban differences in cardiovascular disease risk, health perceptions, and access to health-enhancing resources. His currently funded research focuses on developing and testing lifestyle interventions to reduce obesity among Black men living in the rural South. Findings from his research indicate that lifestyle interventions held in publicly accessible outdoor areas and that incorporate sports and friendly competition are feasible, acceptable, and show promise for addressing obesity. Dr. Abshire serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Rural Health and is a member of the National Rural Health Association’s Rural Obesity and Chronic Disease Interest Group. Dr. Abshire received his BSN, MSN, and PhD from the University of Kentucky College of Nursing.
