The University of Iowa College of Nursing

Daniel Wesemann, Associate Clinical Professor and PMHNP Program Director at the University of Iowa College of Nursing, is a nationally recognized psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner whose leadership in education and clinical practice has transformed care delivery and advanced mental health equity. A staunch advocate for psychotherapy education in PMHNP programs, he spearheaded the first national survey of program directors, influenced updates to national competencies, and authored a psychotherapy toolkit used across the country. His scholarly contributions include highly cited articles and chapters in leading psychiatric nursing texts, and he is a sought-after national speaker on graduate-level psychotherapy education. Clinically, Dr. Wesemann has expanded mental health services to underserved populations, including veterans, incarcerated individuals, rural communities, and students with intellectual disabilities. A veteran himself, he is a board member for Got Your Six-Support Dogs, a national nonprofit pairing service dogs with veterans and first responders with PTSD. His interprofessional research on pediatric bipolar disorder, mood and anxiety disorders, and ADHD has shaped practice and policy. As President of the International Society of Psychiatric Nurses, he builds global partnerships to advance mental health nursing. Dr. Wesemann holds a DNP from Rush University, a MSN and MNHP from the University of Iowa, and MSW from the University of Illinois.
