Emory University Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing
Brittany Butts is an Assistant Professor at the Emory University School of Nursing, with faculty appointments in the Laney Graduate School and the Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology Program. Her research examines the intersection of cardiovascular disease, inflammation, and Alzheimer’s disease risk, with a focus on immune dysregulation, vascular health, and social determinants of health in diverse and underserved populations. She is Principal Investigator on NIH- and foundation-funded studies and has authored more than 35 peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Butts has advanced biomarker science in cardiovascular and brain health through innovative applications of inflammatory, hormonal, and cellular aging markers, integrating laboratory, clinical, and community-based methods. Her work bridges mechanistic discovery with translation to early detection, prevention, and intervention strategies, particularly for populations disproportionately affected by chronic disease. An active leader in professional organizations, Dr. Butts is a Fellow of the American Heart Association and recipient of national research and teaching awards. She is committed to mentoring the next generation of nurse scientists, including PhD students, graduate and undergraduate trainees, and junior faculty. Dr. Butts earned her PhD in Nursing/Immunology from Emory University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine.
