Brenda Knoll

PhD, RN

Associate Professor

Illinois Wesleyan University School of Nursing and Health Sciences and Piomi, LLC

Brenda Knoll is an Associate Professor of Nursing at Illinois Wesleyan University and the Founder of the Premature Infant Oral Motor Intervention (PIOMI) LLC. Dr. Knoll developed an innovative therapy (PIOMI) for prehabilitation in preterm infants as young as 29 weeks gestation. Designed to direct neuronal pathways towards the development of feeding skills, it results in significantly earlier discharge, and improved neurodevelopmental outcomes into early childhood. She is the primary international consultant for PIOMI research, continuing to present, author and consult on studies published in over 60 different journals in disciplines of Nursing, Medicine, and Therapy. Dr. Knoll formed her company, PIOMI LLC, as a repository where she disseminates new research, networks with providers needing protocol development, and offers training and implementation materials in 17 languages. She has provided training in >200 NICUs across >50 countries that are now implementing PIOMI as their standard of care. Through her extensive international research and ongoing education to providers, PIOMI is now the most used NICU feeding therapy worldwide, reducing the economic burden of neonatal care, especially in under-resourced countries. Dr. Knoll earned her BSN from Illinois Wesleyan University, and her MS and PhD from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC).
