Director, Graduate Program in Nursing
Messiah University
Brenda Elliott is an Associate Professor and Director of the Graduate Program in Nursing at Messiah University. Dr. Elliott’s primary research addresses the professional development needs of nurses and nurse educators to teach nurses and nursing students respectively about the healthcare needs of members of the military, veterans, and their families. She has led numerous research studies that provided a foundation for co-editing and contributing to a 2021 book titled Veteran-centered care in education and practice: An essential guide for nursing faculty. Her research has influenced what content is included in commonly used pre-licensure textbooks and what faculty are teaching nursing students to achieve positive veteran health outcomes. Publications and presentations of her work over the last decade laid the groundwork for improving the nursing care provided to this population. A second area of research focused on military nursing has broadened what is known about this sub-population of nurses and can serve as a foundation for supporting their transition to civilian roles. She serves on the Editorial Board and is a Contributing Editor for Home Healthcare Now. Dr. Elliott received her BSN from Lycoming College, her MSN from Bloomsburg University, and her PhD from Widener University.
