Benita Chatmon is an Associate Professor of Clinical Nursing and Assistant Dean of Clinical Nursing Education at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center-New Orleans School of Nursing. Her work spans clinical education, workforce development, and health policy, with a focus on advancing equity and building sustainable nursing leadership. As President of the Louisiana State Nurses Association, she supported transformative legislation such as the Surgical Smoke Evacuation Law and contributed to the SCR 20 task force, which shaped maternal health legislation aimed at reducing disparities and expanding access to care. Nationally, she served on the American Nurses Association’s NextGen Advisory Committee for New Nurses, helping analyze data from over 20,000 participants to inform retention strategies and policy recommendations across generational lines. Through HRSA-funded initiatives such as the Nursing Workforce Diversity Program, Dr. Chatmon has led efforts to mentor emerging nurse leaders, increase minority student retention, and strengthen the pipeline of culturally competent providers. Her leadership promotes inclusive excellence, data-driven advocacy, and policy engagement that addresses structural barriers in healthcare. Dr. Chatmon earned her BSN and MSN from Southern University and A&M College and her PhD from Capella University.
