Professor of Sleep & Health Behavior
University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing
Amy Sawyer is a Professor of Sleep & Health Behavior at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. Dr. Sawyer's research focuses on addressing treatment disparities for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) among underserved adults. The first to document critical treatment adherence gaps for Black adults, with findings now also extended to Hispanic populations, Dr. Sawyer's research has transformed the field's understanding of the problem and is shaping payer policies and research standards in sleep medicine. Through groundbreaking studies examining patient-reported outcomes and experiences (PRO/PRE), Dr. Sawyer has illuminated systemic barriers to care, and treatment-related and sociocultural factors that underpin sleep apnea care experiences for Black and Hispanic adults in the U.S. She is now leading a PCORI engagement research core dedicated to partnering with underserved communities to co-create solutions, drive evidence-based policy change, and conduct pragmatic research addressing sleep inequities. This work has catalyzed institutional changes to improve OSA care access and outcomes. Dr. Sawyer is dedicated to raising awareness about sleep health and sleep disorders in under-resourced communities and to collaborating with these communities to make sleep health accessible to everyone. Dr. Sawyer received her BSN from Millersville University, MScN from Johns Hopkins University, PhD from University of Pennsylvania, and completed two post-doctoral fellowships at University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine and School of Nursing.
