Alex Hoyt
PhD, RN
Associate Professor
MGH Institute of Health Professions
Alex Hoyt is an Associate Professor in the School of Nursing at the MGH Institute of Health Professions. Dr. Hoyt studies the intersection of state-level public policy (e.g., scope of practice regulations) and nursing’s professional policy (e.g., The Consensus Model). Using advanced quantitative methods, nationally representative data, and boundary-spanning frameworks, he conducts rigorous evaluations of policies affecting the advanced practice nursing workforce. His work supports nursing’s governance network - including regulators, accreditors, certifiers, and educators - by generating evidence to assess provider outcomes, update educational standards, inform certification requirements, and improve regulatory guidelines. As an academic, Dr. Hoyt’s research, service, and teaching are mutually reinforcing. He is an award-winning peer reviewer, a subject matter expert who has served on both state and national education and workforce committees, and a sought-after advisor. Dr. Hoyt holds a PhD in Social Policy and Management from the Heller School at Brandeis University, MSN from the MGH Institute of Health Professions, and a BA in Sociology/Anthropology from Denison University.
