It has been 50 years since the federal government established legal protections for people with disabilities in the workforce by codifying requirements for reasonable accommodations through the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Since then, advocacy groups, researchers, and individuals have pushed for additional protections and awareness of the challenges faced by people with disabilities but there is still progress to be made. This panel will discuss the efforts currently in place to ensure healthy, fulfilling lives for individuals with different abilities, the partnerships needed for change, and the policy actions necessary to empower them.

As the relationship between environmental health and social justice becomes more evident through the increase in recent natural disasters and public awareness of social inequalities, healthcare professionals are refocusing to address problems and provide solutions for communities and groups at risk for disproportionate environmental health disparities. Environmental justice and health equity are deeply rooted in environmental policy and action must be taken to advance climate-based solutions. This closing keynote will address the intersection of environmental health and social justice reform as well as how nurses can advocate for policy that addresses environmental health threats.
