Michael Evans, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FACHE, FAAN

Dean and Grover E. Murray Professor & University Medical Center Endowed Chair for Excellence in Nursing, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center

Michael L. Evans, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FACHE, FAAN — Dr. Michael Evans is Dean and a Grover E. Murray Professor at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Nursing for the past 10 years. Prior to coming to Texas Tech, he was the President and CEO of Barnes-Jewish College and Founding Dean of the Goldfarb School of Nursing in St. Louis.  He was in hospital administration for more than 25 years before his career bridged to academic administration.  Dr. Evans was with Texas Health Resources, first as Chief Nurse Executive of Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas and then as the system’s first Chief Learning Officer. Prior to joining THR, Dr. Evans was Chief Nursing Officer at St. David’s Health Care System in Austin, Texas and Chief Nursing Officer at Northwest Texas Health Care System in Amarillo, Texas. 


Dr. Evans holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Texas Tech University, a diploma in nursing from Northwest Texas Hospital School of Nursing, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from West Texas A&M University, a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, and a PhD in nursing administration from the University of Texas at Austin. 


Dr. Evans has served as President of the Texas Nurses Association and on the board of directors of the American Nurses Association, including the offices of Secretary and Treasurer, for eight years.  While on the ANA board, he also served on the board of ANCC in the early years of the association.   He was again appointed in 2009 to the ANCC board of directors.  At the end of 2015, Dr. Evans completed his second term as ANCC President.  He then served a final two-year term as an ANCC board member and Director for ANCC World, ANCC’s global arm. 
Dr. Evans has been honored as a distinguished alumnus by the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston School of Nursing and by the University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing.  In 2014, he was the recipient of the Luther Christman Award, bestowed by the American Nurses Association.  In 2020, he was named a Texas Leader and Legend by the Texas Nurses Association.


Dr. Evans is board certified as an advanced nurse executive by ANCC.  He is also board certified in hospital administration and a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.  Dr. Evans is a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing.
