Yui Matsuda is an Associate Professor of Clinical at the University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies. The goal of Dr. Matsuda’s research program is to improve family health using culturally-tailored interventions in the community. She co-created the nurse-led Baby Steps program for NICU infants and their families, which provides culturally-responsive, individually-tailored telehealth nursing care during their transition from hospital to home. Baby Steps aids urban/rural families facing language barriers, immigration uncertainty, and economic hardship. Since 2020, Baby Steps reduced NICU readmission/ED/urgent care use by over 50%, and connected nearly 700 families to healthcare entities. Baby Steps was designated as an Edge Runner in 2023 by the American Academy of Nursing and awarded a Health Innovator Award by Healthcare Innovation in 2022. Additionally, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation report, “Mapping the Landscape of Anti-Racism in Nursing,” recognized Baby Steps as a groundbreaking intervention that addresses structural racism in healthcare. Dr. Matsuda received her BSN from Liberty University, her MPH and PhD from the Virginia Commonwealth University and her Postdoctoral Fellowship from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
