Tanya R. Sorrell

Tanya R. Sorrell is a national leader in Behavioral Health and Substance use Policy and Clinical care for underserved groups, advocating in multiple states for culturally equitable, holistic care to the underserved. By advocating for culturally inclusive care by incorporating Mexican Traditional practices alongside Western medicine for Latinos on the Arizona border, she’s changed lives. She led a clinical and legislative policy that culminated in a $5 million/year Medication Assisted Treatment Expansion grant, which funds 35 clinics, serving 25 rural counties, and over 4300 patients in Colorado. Her team published 5 articles in the initial two years of their research work. Her clinical research trajectory expanded as Dr. Sorrell moved to Rush University, Department of Psychiatry to found the Substance Use Disorder- Center of Excellence and an NIH NIDA Clinical Trials Network. Providing Substance use treatment and legislative testimony in Arizona, Colorado and now Illinois to over 10,000 patients, stigma-free education to over 20,000 Chicago residents in 3 years, and her most recent work, providing Substance use education to over 325,000 public school students in Illinois, Dr. Sorrell works to make a difference in the lives of those at risk and using drugs in the US.
