Stephanie A. Vaughn is a Professor, Emeritus at California State University, Fullerton; and a Clinical Nurse Specialist at Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Tustin (CA). Dr. Vaughn was integral in the development of the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses (ARN) Competency Model for Professional Rehabilitation Nursing. This Model, a premier resource for advancing the special practice of rehabilitation nursing, has been disseminated widely; and provides a framework for rehabilitation nursing internationally. Recognized for this innovative work, Dr. Vaughn was selected by the World Health Organization as one of two nurses for an interprofessional technical workgroup charged with the development of the WHO Rehabilitation Competency Framework (RCF). The RCF provides global stakeholders across disciplines with the knowledge and skills to meet rehabilitation workforce challenges. Dr. Vaughn’s research focused on stroke prevention behaviors, the management of post-stroke sequelae and caregiver needs in the Hispanic/Latino community. Working with the American Heart/Stroke Association she implemented quarterly bilingual stroke and heart disease prevention education and health screenings for the local Hispanic/Latino community, including the production/distribution of a telenovela promoting heart/brain health via healthy eating. Dr. Vaughn is a past president of ARN and continues to serve the organization on multiple projects; she is the editor of the 8th edition of the The Specialty Practice of Rehabilitation Nursing: A Core Curriculum. Dr. Vaughn holds a PhD from the University of San Diego, a MSN from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, and a BSN from the University of Evansville (IN).
