Lisa F. Brown is an Associate Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Brown's impact has been in developing assessment and intervention strategies to support neonate-maternal feeding skills, essential for infant thriving and neurodevelopment. Infant feeding issues are a significant clinical problem, with a large number of preterm infants experiencing feeding problems in their first year. To address this, Dr. Brown created the Maternal-Infant Feeding Tool (MIFT), which assesses feeding practices and provides video vignettes that demonstrate normal feeding behaviors and interventions to improve maladaptive practices. The MIFT has shown strong reliability, allowing research within and beyond the US. Data from the MIFT's video vignettes supports targeted assessment and interventions for different clinical manifestations, with qualitative and quantitative data showing improved maternal confidence, bonding, weight gain, developmental capacity, and newborn energy levels. Dr. Brown has disseminated her research through publications and presentations at national and international meetings, and her work has been featured on reputable platforms such as MDLinx and a podcast sponsored by the Journal for Specialists in Pediatric Nursing. She is now expanding her research to capture more physiologic and cost-based data to further document the positive outcomes of her interventions.
