Through the intersecting lenses of family science, serious illness, bioethics, and social determinants of health, Kim Mooney-Doyle’s research has influenced palliative care science by examining the influence of serious pediatric illness on family life and the experience of parenting within this context. She highlighted meaningful yet taken-for-granted family processes and relationships, such as family belonging and parents' moral distress. By unveiling the invisible casualties of serious pediatric illness, her research broadens and critically interrogates our conceptualization of family-centered care, paving the way for models of care that align with families and children's values and needs. This research also filled a critical gap by uncovering and addressing adolescent siblings’ overlooked interpersonal and intrapersonal needs. Dr. Mooney-Doyle’s community-engaged work centers family perspectives and partnerships, including at the NICHD Pediatric Palliative Care State of the Science. Organizations across five countries integrated her research into guiding professional documents and position statements, which include significant policy statements about pediatric palliative care from five countries. In addition, pediatric palliative care researchers across the globe have adapted and applied her descriptions of parents' expectations for support and parent moral distress in their contexts. She holds a leadership position in the International Family Nursing Association. She has received awards from the Eastern Nursing Research Society and the International Family Nursing Association for her contributions to nursing science. Dr. Mooney-Doyle received her BSN from Boston College and her MS, PhD, and Postdoctoral Fellowship from the University of Pennsylvania.
