John Unsworth is Chair of the Queen’s Nursing Institute, the professional body which leads community nursing in the United Kingdom and Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor at Northumbria University. He is a primary care based specialist practitioner with a background in clinical practice, management, education and research. His primary focus is on workforce policy including the development of specialist standards for new and emerging roles in homeless and inclusion health and criminal justice nursing. Dr. Unsworth’s research work relates to all aspects of the workforce from initial preparation through to workforce transformation and support. He has experience of workforce redesign in relation to developing the community nurses’ role around admission avoidance. In addition, Dr. Unsworth has extensive experience of developing nursing, medical and higher education internationally having worked to develop teachers and practice in China, Thailand, Vietnam, Ghana, Bahrain, Hungary, Ukraine and Grenada (West Indies). Dr. Unsworth earned his first degree from Northumbria University in Newcastle-upon-Tyne before completing specialist post-graduate degrees in community health, and medical law. He has a PhD from Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen. Dr. Unsworth was awarded an OBE for services to community nursing and community nurse education in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2022.
