PhD, RN, CDCES
Program Director/Senior Lecturer
Teachers College Columbia University

Jane K. Dickinson is the Director of the doctoral program in Nursing Education at Teachers College Columbia University. Dr. Dickinson's research established that negative messages used in diabetes care are problematic and lead to distrust, lack of motivation, and isolation. In 2019, she was named the national Diabetes Educator of the Year for this work. Dr. Dickinson previously developed and directed the in- and outpatient Diabetes Education Program at Yampa Valley Medical Center. She is the current president of the Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists and has served on the ADCES Board of Directors since 2020. Dr. Dickinson was an author on the recent international Stigma Consensus Statement published in Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology. She is first author on the language guidance paper, published in the US in 2017, which has been cited extensively and has awakened health professionals throughout the world to the importance of person-centered, strengths-based language. Dr. Dickinson’s work has led to the development of clinical guidelines and standards of care nationally, and language guidance papers internationally. Dr. Dickinson holds a PhD in nursing from the University of Connecticut, an MSN from Yale University, and a BA from St. Olaf College.
