Heather E. Cuevas’ research addresses factors that influence cognitive function for those who have type 2 diabetes in clinic and community settings. She has led interdisciplinary teams and conducted NIH funded research studies to develop one of the first cognitive rehabilitation interventions for people with type 2 diabetes. Components of this innovative intervention have been successfully adapted for the YMCA in a diabetes self-management intervention. It has also been translated for use in a diabetes self-management program for an underserved rural population in Mexico. Additionally, her work to promote screening for cognitive problems in populations with T2DM has resulted in federal funding to implement a tool for primary care providers to identify individuals at risk for dementia in large health care organizations in Texas. Over the course of her career, Dr. Cuevas has actively contributed to advancing nursing research including international and national service through the Alzheimer's Association International Society to Advance Alzheimer's Research and Treatment and the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists. The impact of her research is far-reaching and is cited in nursing, medicine, neuropsychology, and aging studies. Dr. Cuevas received her BSN from Baylor University, her MSN and PhD from The University of Texas at Austin.
