Eileen J. Carter

Eileen J. Carter is an emergency department nurse by background and Assistant Professor at University of Connecticut School of Nursing. Her most recent work targets nurses and/or parents to improve the judicious use of antibiotics to curb the global health threat of antimicrobial resistance. In her funded research, Dr. Carter has identified nursing interventions that are acceptable and feasible to improve antibiotic use and has quantified the impact of documented penicillin allergies on antibiotic selection in children. Most recently, she is testing the feasibility of a multifaceted implementation strategy to improve nurses comprehensive evaluation of reported penicillin allergies among perioperative patients to minimize patient harm. Dr. Carter is passionate about bridging silos between academia and practice, and led the development, evaluation, and dissemination of a nationally recognized academic-practice program that is entering its tenth year. Her work has been funded by the National Institute of Nursing Research, the CCI Research Foundation, the APIC Heroes Implementation Award, and the Robert E. Leet and Clara Guthrie Patterson Trust. Dr. Carter received her BSN from New York University and her PhD from Columbia University.
