Clara M. Gona is an Associate Professor of Nursing at the MGH Institute of Health Professions and a Faculty Nurse Scientist at the Munn Center for Nursing Research at Massachusetts General Hospital. Her areas of expertise include research, mentorship, and education in the United States and Africa. In the U.S., her work focuses on reducing cardiovascular (CVD) risk among Zimbabwean immigrants through community engagement initiatives. She has spearheaded several influential studies exploring the factors contributing to CVD risks and has subsequently developed a culturally tailored risk reduction intervention. In Zimbabwe, Dr. Gona's contributions have been instrumental in helping shape HIV policy and care, leading to improved outcomes for individuals living with HIV. In addition, her involvement in the Global Burden of Disease study has facilitated the enhancement of health policy across southern Africa by providing comprehensive, data-informed insights that have improved policy effectiveness and community health outcomes. A dedicated mentor, Dr. Gona has significantly influenced the careers of numerous students, nurses, and junior faculty both in Africa and the U.S. expediting their careers in healthcare, and academia. Dr. Gona holds a BSN from Johns Hopkins University, an MSN from UNC Wilmington, and a PhD in Nursing from Boston College.
