Christi Zuber is credited for leading the first on-the-ground implementation of Human-Centered Design methods (HCD) in healthcare delivery back in 2003. Dr. Zuber’s work has been cited over 10,000 times, creating a tidal wave of spread across healthcare. Dr. Zuber is part practitioner, part researcher, and has revolutionized healthcare by integrating HCD into clinical practices and creating tangible and repeatable approaches for nursing innovation. Her work has directly impacted over 68,000 nurses and improved patient care outcomes nationwide. She received her PhD through a split-site program between Coventry University in England and Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. Currently, she is a Nurse Scientist in the Office of Research Patient Care Services at Stanford Health Care and the Founder and CEO of Aspen Labs Network, a design and innovation consulting firm. She has spoken about her work on DEI efforts multiple times at Magnet Conferences and leads the Innovation capacity-building program for 35 VA medical centers nationally. Her research focuses on community and workforce co-design, health equity, and capacity building. At Kaiser Permanente (KP), she established and lead their Human-Centered Innovation practice for 15 years. The Nurse Knowledge Exchange program, developed under her leadership, has been implemented across 40 KP hospitals and spread to numerous other health systems worldwide, leading to outcomes including a 40% improvement in patient satisfaction scores, a 30% reduction in nursing communication-related errors, along with significant increases in HCAHPS scores. Her work has supported global dissemination of these methods through features in Fast Company, the New York Times, and the most cited Design Thinking article to date which can be found in the Harvard Business Review. She proudly contributes to the nursing profession by serving as a Board Member on the ANA Innovation Advisory Board.
