Ashley R. Graham-Perel is a Nursing Historian, Assistant Professor, and Director of Diversity and Cultural Affairs at Columbia University School of Nursing. A preeminent thought leader and authority on Black nursing history, Dr. Graham-Perel reshapes the landscape of scholarly dissemination beyond traditional confines, particularly in media. Nationally acclaimed, she is a sought-after resource, unveiling the perspectives of nurses whose voices have been overlooked in the conventional portrayal of nursing history. Her most significant contributions span nationwide presentations, comprehensive oral histories of prominent living Black nursing leaders, dynamic production and presentation of Black nursing history videos, influential consultancy with universities on history integration into nursing curriculums, and groundbreaking course redesign through the pioneering Colloquium in Nursing History and Anti-racism Affirmation series. Her commitment to connecting nursing practice, DEI, and history has led to collaborative invitations with the National League of Nursing’s Strategic Action Group, the American Journal of Nursing, and American Association of History of Nursing, shaping the vision for transforming nursing to address structural racism and societal inequities. Dr. Graham-Perel received an EdD from Teachers College, Columbia University, an MS from New York University Rory Meyers College of Nursing, and a BS from New York City College of Technology.
