April A. Braswell is an Associate Professor, Certified Nurse Educator, and primary care Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Dr. Braswell’s significant contributions center on the enhancement of pediatric holistic comfort care and comfort equity for vulnerable and marginalized youth. Using a “theory-into-practice" philosophy, she has directed research and presentations, award-winning teaching innovation, and novel instrument development focused on the enhancement of comfort in the physical, psychospiritual, sociocultural, and environmental context. As an international theory consultant for nurse theorist Katharine Kolcaba, Dr. Braswell has reached students, clinicians, and scientists on five continents. Among her scientific works are a series of recent research studies and publications related to the development, feasibility, and psychometrics of her novel storybook instrument for children: the Pediatric Procedural Holistic Comfort Assessment (PPHCA). The child-friendly animated PPHCA measures new and holistic items such as noise, temperature, play, hugs, talk-time, favorite people, going “potty”, and also pain. Providing direct care to nearly 10,000 patients in her career, and currently still in practice, Dr. Braswell is dedicated to pediatric health. Dr. Braswell earned her BSN from the University of Central Florida. Both her MSN and PhD were earned from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
