University of Utah

Barbara L Wilson, PhD, RNC is an Associate Professor at the University of Utah and Interim Dean.

Dr. Wilson’s ongoing contributions in creating innovative programs both in the service and educational settings, coupled with significant systems-level health services research and leadership, have culminated in a profound and sustained impact on maternal health policy and improved maternal outcomes at the regional and national level. As the inaugural Administrator of Women and Newborn Services for one of the largest integrated health systems in the Intermountain West, she led the successful integration of obstetrical care for over 500 nurses and more than 11,000 annual births. Her expertise in maternal health led to several prominent national appointments here she helped shape policy and practice for the childbearing family as a member of the National Research Advisory Board; National Implementation and Diffusion of Evidence-Based Practice Advisory Panel; expert panel member for the Postpartum Hemorrhage Project; and expert member of the Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Review.

She is a visionary leader for distance-accessible education, advancing the quality and scope of distance education to be among the best in the nation. She leveraged her experience to make RN-BSN education dramatically more affordable and accessible for nurses seeking to advance their level of education, particularly in a region like the Intermountain West that is largely rural and frontier.

Dr Wilson received her ADN from Weber State University; her BSN from the University of Utah; her MSN from Brigham Young University; and her PhD from the University of Arizona.
