Khlood Salman, Associate Professor at Duquesne University’s School of Nursing’s, exceptional contribution to nursing is in the field of health promotion and disease prevention. Her work improves the wellbeing of immigrant and refugee Arab Muslim Women. She provides other nurses and students with a deeper understanding of the cultural and religious factors that pose barriers to Arab women’s engagement in breast and cervical cancer screening. Her outreach and advocacy on behalf of immigrant and refugee women began regionally in the Islamic Center of Pittsburgh, PA. Her selection as a Fulbright Scholar enabled her to extend her work globally with Muslim women in their homelands of Jordan and Saudi Arabia. Dr. Salman’s identity as an Arab Muslim immigrant woman, along with her professional nursing and public health expertise, facilitates her communication with and understanding of other Arab women. She has improved awareness of the benefits of breast and cervical cancer screening. Dr. Salman willingly shares her culturally informed interventions to promote cancer detection and preserve women’s health by disseminating her research in prestigious regional and national/international presentations.

For over a decade, Dr. Salman has extended her advocacy for health promotion among Arab women and with her inter-professional colleagues on Duquesne University’s Consortium of Christian Muslim Dialogue. Her seminal work has resulted in greater integration of health into these interfaith cultural and religious dialogues, Dr. Salman is a cofounder of the Allegheny County Immunization Coalition, a model for health promotion that has been replicated in communities across the state and country.
