Mary V. Muse, M.S., RN, CCHP-RN, CCHP-A currently serves as the Chief Nursing Officer for the State of Wisconsin Department of Corrections overseeing a correctional population of 22,000, which includes adults and juveniles. Ms. Muse is a board member of the National Commission of Correctional Health, and a co-founder of the American Correctional Nurses Association. Additionally, she co-chaired the newest edition of the American Nurses Association’s Scope and Standards for Correctional Nursing which includes her proposed framework for correctional nursing. Ms. Muse also serves as a distinguished resource for the publication of a special edition on Correctional Nursing for the Journal of Correctional Health Care scheduled for print in 2021.
A seasoned nurse leader and expert in correctional health care, Mary Muse has held senior nursing leadership positions in hospitals, community, and correctional health, including jails and prisons. Her leadership roles have included experiences in Kansas City, Missouri, Chicago, and Wisconsin. She practiced for 15 years in pediatrics, serving as a clinical manager at Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center in Chicago. Mary has held academic appointments at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, Chicago State University, the University of Illinois, Chicago and the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
Mary Muse’s served twice as the President of the Academy of Correctional Health Care Professionals, authored the “Professional Practice” chapter for the textbook “Essentials of Correctional Nursing”. Ms. Muse is a legal nurse expert and consultant.
Mary received her BS and MS in Nursing from Saint Xavier School of Nursing, Chicago, Illinois.
