Jennifer Hatzfeld

Director of Air Force Nursing Operations

United States Air Force

Colonel Jennifer Hatzfeld is the Director of Healthcare and Nursing Operations in the U.S. Air Force. In that role, she is responsible for oversight of clinical nursing operations at 75 military treatment facilities and collaborates with 10 Major Commands to standardize business practices and employ evidence based practices across the Air Force Medical Service in support of health care excellence and clinical currency. Col Hatzfeld entered the Air Force Nurse Corps in 1995, first as a clinical nurse, at bases in California, South Korea, and Italy, and later managing population health efforts as a Health Care Integrator at Randolph Air Force Base in Texas. She completed her PhD in Nursing in 2009 at Johns Hopkins University where she studied disparities in health outcomes among active duty Air Force members by race/ethnicity, gender, and rank. As a nurse scientist, Col Hatzfeld has focused her research on military-specific topics, as well as the prevention and management of chronic diseases; in 2017 she was selected to serve as the Consultant to the Air Force Surgeon General for Nursing Research. One of the highlights of her career has been finding ways to support and develop the scholarly development of nurses across the Department of Defense through individual mentorship, making strategic connections with subject matter experts, expanding funded programs, and finding creative ways to support a culture of clinical inquiry. Prior to her current assignment, Col Hatzfeld served as the Executive Director of the TriService Nursing Research Program.
