Dr. D’Alfonso is Executive Director of Professional Excellence and Founding Executive Director of The KP Scholars Academy with Kaiser Permanente in Oakland and Adjunct Faculty at the University of San Francisco (USF) School of Nursing and Health Professions.
Fresh from High School, Jim completed a certificate program in surgical technology at the Maine Medical Center in Portland. The influence of Perioperative Nurse role models and mentors he worked with and their unswerving commitment to professional excellence, led Jim to a career and life of service in nursing. He received his Diploma of Nursing from Allentown Hospital School of Nursing in Pennsylvania and as an aspiring nurse leader went on to complete his BSN and MSN at the University of Phoenix, Colorado Campus and Doctor of Nursing Practice in Executive Leadership at the University of San Francisco.
Jim is a board-certified nurse executive, Caritas Coach, Master HeartMath Executive Trainer and a Distinguished Fellow of the Nursing Academies of Practice. He received an Honorary Doctorate in Caring Science for his career-long devotion to transformative leadership, scholarly teaching and practices in human caring in 2015. Jim has published over 30 journal articles, chapters and texts and in June of 2020 a book he co-edited and authored was published on Kaiser’s 75-year legacy of disruptive innovation in nursing education, professional practice and leadership.
Jim is president of USF’s Beta Gamma Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau and as an international Caring Science scholar, he has conducted workshops, consulted and lectured world-wide for over 30 years.
