Adejoke B. Ayoola

PhD, RN

Professor

Calvin University

Adejoke B. Ayoola is a Professor at Calvin University Department of Nursing.

Dr. Ayoola’s research advances the science of health promotion among women and girls from various economic, educational and ethnic backgrounds by focusing on increasing women’s knowledge and understanding of reproductive physiology and contraception. She created the Preconception Reproductive Knowledge Promotion (PREKNOP) program for women and launched Health Education And Leadership Training for a Hopeful future (H.E.A.L.T.H.) Camp initiative for girls aged 9-15 years. She designed HEALTH camp with the goal of promoting a culture of health, educating girls about their bodies, broadening their vision as future leaders, and introducing them early to different health professions especially nursing. The PREKNOP intervention is designed to correct unfounded beliefs about risk of conception and contraceptive use and develop more positive and proactive practices related to monitoring of female reproductive changes, development of reproductive life plan and pregnancy recognition skills. Based on the impact of PREKNOP and HEALTH camp she received 2016 YWCA Tribute Award for promotion of women’s health and wellness. These programs have led to increasing request for the implementation of PREKNOP and design of similar programs including the HEALTH camp at various community settings in the U.S. and internationally. In recognition of her expertise in maternal health research and innovative designs of community-based interventions, she has started collaborative projects in African countries.

Dr. Ayoola received her BNSc and Master’s in Nursing from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria, and her PhD from Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI.
